Wild Half – Training Week 1

    May 16th, 2012

So, I did it, completed week one of training for the Wild Half Marathon. 9.5 miles of running over the course of the last 7 days…I’ve never ran so much in one week ever! My longest run this week was three miles. Some days were better than others. My training schedule says, “go for an easy 2 mile run.” Guess what? A 2 mile run is still not easy for me! My average pace has improved to 10:47 min/mi so that is a positive in week one.

I still can’t fathom running for 13.1 miles but I signed up for this so it will happen! I need some new tunes to run to though because I’m getting painfully bored! Tell me what you are running to and I will add it to my play list and include all the songs in next week’s blog. My favorite song on my list is Feelin’ So Good (Remix) by Jennifer Lopez, that’s always my last half mile song!

Anyone want to join Team Morey? I’m going to supply shirts for everyone who joins me!

    See you training!

Event Planner to Half Marathon Trainee

    May 9th, 2012

A little while back, we had one of our many yearly Wild Half Marathon meetings with CGI Racing. We mostly discussed ways to market the event which is always an exciting discussion… then our Brand Manager, Tim, came up with one of his “fabulous ideas” that always causes me a lot of work. This time it’s a VERY different type of work.

Tim says, “Kristel! You run! Let’s have our event planner actually participate in one of her own events and blog about it!”

“Me Running” is a phrase I would use very loosely. I jog twice a week usually about two and half miles. I do the occasional 5k and on a whim this year signed up for the Ultimate Mud Run Night OPS on April 21, 2012. If you don’t know what that is (and really it makes perfect sense that you don’t), it’s 7.8 miles of 24 obstacles IN THE DARK! Some of the obstacles included mud, tunnels, fire and all kinds of fun! Was I ready for the challenge? Not really with little to no training! At least at the obstacles I was allowed to stop running.

Ultimate Mud Run 2012 - Partners through the mud

So, here’s the deal..I’ve done my research and most training plans are 12-14 weeks long which would have me starting Memorial Day Weekend for the August 26 Race Day. However, they all start with 3 and 4 mile runs so I think I better start early especially with the busy season upon me. I’m not going to lie. I’m not going to sugar coat things. Because if I can do this, so can you. 13.1 miles can’t be that bad, right?
So here are my current stats:
Height: 5 feet tall (yes that’s it)
    Weight: 145 pounds
    Pace: 11:20 min/mile
Here are the tools I plan to use during my training:
Map My Run (website & iphone app)
    Fit Sugar
Emotional Support from anyone who’s willing to give it!
    So, who’s running with me?
See you on the pavement and boards in Wildwood,
    Kristel

Memoreys from the Wildwoods Spring Bridal Fair

    March 30th, 2012

Hundreds of brides and some grooms descended on the Wildwoods’ Convention Center this past Sunday for the Annual Wildwoods’ Spring Bridal Fair as we launched Memoreys by Morey’s Piers. Brides who were searching to make their Fairytale Day come true found vendors with everything from dresses, florists, venues, air brush tanning and even could taste food from caterers. Stephanie, Merideth, Krista and I had so much fun talking to all the brides about their plans and giving out information on Memoreys and of course yummy cake pops! Check out the photos below. To see all the photos from the event, visit Memoreys on Facebook!

Don’t forget to join us on April 14th at the Pan American Hotel for our Memoreys Bridal Fair. Visit with our exclusive vendors and enjoy a private trolley and tram car tour of our unique venues and locations! Don’t miss it!

See you at the Bridal Fair,

Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Rubber Ducks and Port-a-Potties

    February 20th, 2012

On a regular day in the summer I deal with food, weird entertainment and toilets. Who else can say that? The food and toilets…sure, but I’m going to throw rubber ducks into the mix now too. I mean, some times I sit at my desk and wonder how this happened. I jokingly call myself the official port-o-potty location picker of Morey’s Piers, but in fact, I am! My last blog about the fancy parties I get to attend doesn’t come without my share of trash clean up, toilet duty and drying out thousands of rubber ducks after they swim in the Lazy River (now called the Adventure River). I am not at all complaining because on any given day I’d take my job over any of my friends’ boring office jobs, but I also didn’t want to paint a false impression of the fabulous life of a special events planner either.

    From Glammed up...

    ... to clean up!

    The Special Event at Tampa

    February 6th, 2012

Want to know what it’s like to party… I mean work…like a special events planner? The Special Event took place in Tampa, FL which is the convention of all conventions for event planners. Everything you can think of to throw a party on one trade show floor from trash cans to table linens to entertainment to event insurance and the list goes on and on.

    A Spectacular Sampling

Then I went to a few seminars on lighting, entertainment, risk management, catering and my favorite seminar – environmentally friendly events. Got some great ideas to really wow you this summer! And the parties…throwing parties grand enough to impress a bunch of event planners is not an easy job but the committee who threw the Grand Opening Celebration and The Special Event Starts here did it and did it well. The entertainment was awesome, the decorations…amazing and the food was delicious. I can’t wait to put all my new ideas to work on the piers this summer.

    See you at the Shore,

    Kristel

    Looking For Felix

    January 18th, 2012

“Welcome to Morey’s FEARS! Felix here, the boardwalk barker, and if you’re looking for Morey’s signature smiles…you’re barking mad!”

Felix Greets Guests at Morey's FEARS

Christmas is over, now it’s time to get serious about Halloween… If you are tall, lanky, like to scare the crap out of people and want to be the star of Morey’s FEARS, I might be looking for you. This is a seasonal Halloween position that includes but is not limited to some training in September and weekends in October. Contact me at kristel.fillmore@moreyspiers.com.

A little about the reality of being a mascot: Being a mascot was voted #4 on Cracked.com’s “Silly Sounding Jobs That Are Way Harder Than You Think.” While the job is fun, it’s tiring and you have to keep your energy up at all times. There’s a good chance you will be hot or cold and uncomfortable. You can’t be shy even when there are scary teenagers surrounding you. As much as the guests are told not to touch or grab you, they will. Make up takes at least an hour for Felix. Red contacts are required.

Even with that reality there’s nothing more fun then making people scream and runaway from you…trust me. I know.

Be part of the horror at the Shore like never before!

(And if you aren’t into the scariness of Morey’s FEARS but like the idea of being a mascot…there are always Sunny & Curley positions open all summer long.)

    See you at Morey’s FEARS,

    Kristel

    A Very Morey Christmas!

    December 26th, 2011

While most companies let loose at their holiday gatherings we do not quite go that far…

Maybe a little bit of Terry O’ke, good food and Tim’s very famous homemade desserts, but our holiday gathering supports two local charities close to our hearts. Each year the holiday gathering committee gathers donations in support of the Volunteers in Medicine in the way of prizes to raffle off. The raffle continually donates about $1,500 dollars each year to the charity. New this year, our associates are collecting toys and Acme gift cards for the “Lynch who Stole Christmas,” part of the Lunch with Lynch Charity in Wildwood. We are so excited to be able to support both charities who support families in our own backyard!

    The Christmas Committee

We are also excited for Tim’s array of tiny desserts.

    Tim's Tiny Treats!

And I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you we DO like to let loose too! (Who’s signing Dino up to sing “Santa, Baby” this year?)

    Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

What If I Worked In A Bank Like My Plan?

    November 30th, 2011

Camping on the Beach for A Closer Walk

Without a doubt I can tell you most of my colleagues fell into this profession. I’m pretty sure the general public does not sit in a statistics lecture when they are 20 years old and dream of working at an amusement park (I’m sure I do know one or two of them though). My plan? Oh, my plan was to work in a bank. Considering I barely balance my check book that wasn’t a good plan, I admit. Instead I plan events for an amusement park. There are not many people out there who can say that.

There are also not many people whose boss comes in and tells them “let’s do breakfast on the Ferris Wheel” or “I want to shoot someone out of a cannon” or “I want to have a funeral for a ride” or “do you know any freak show people?” or “let’s have fireworks for that.” I could go on with these but you get the idea. At the end of the day my job is to make my boss and the other creative people’s ideas come to life for a Grand Opening of a ride or some other type of party.

Just when I think this might get boring (as if I wouldn’t be bored in a bank) Jack, Tim or Nick come into my office with one of these crazy lines and it usually starts like this…” Your going to think this is crazy but just listen to my idea…” I usually respond with a “NO!” Then “we will need too many permits!” followed by “what’s my budget?” and ending with “Ok, I’ll make it happen.”

I wonder what I’d be doing in a bank right now?

So, while this wasn’t my plan…I couldn’t be happier even though I tell them “NO” every time first.
